65 Years of Telecoms History – SCTE Launches Searchable Web-Based Archive

Editor

The SCTE (Society for Broadband Professionals) has launched a searchable web-based archive which chronicles the development of the modern telecoms industry from its early beginnings to the exciting multimedia possibilities of today’s high speed broadband.

Announced at the ANGA Cable show in Cologne, the comprehensive collection of documents and articles is now available online and is now fully searchable for SCTE members all over the world. This valuable research resource encompasses over 65 years of telecoms history – a rich source of content that includes archive copies as far back as 1946 of the SCTE’s Broadband Journal/CTE Journal. It also includes the Crosstalk, Bulletin and selected International Communications News archives. It will be invaluable for international telecoms engineers and industry experts and can be viewed via its website at www.thescte.eu.

Dr Roger Blakeway, President of the SCTE, revealed the full details and importance of the new archive during the ANGA Cable exhibition and conference: “This is a historic moment for SCTE and for the industry. Our 65-year history as the global professional body for all telecoms and now broadband engineers worldwide has enabled us to gather together a unique collection of documents and published materials stretching back to the dawn of modern communications.”

During the ANGA show the SCTE will also be announcing its new online training assessment centre which enables its global membership of engineers to complete their training and further their careers with fully accredited SCTE qualifications. The SCTE has also teamed up with the ANGA exhibition organisers to offer 20 SCTE members a bursary to attend the ANGA Cable Show in Germany this year – the overall package includes flights, hotel accommodation, entrance to the technical sessions at ANGA and an invitation to the party night.

Founded in 1945, the SCTE is a Learned Society and non-profitmaking organisation whose aim is to raise the standard of broadband engineering in the telecommunications industry. It is one of the world’s oldest established telecommunications engineers’ organisations. Its members can be found in 42 countries worldwide with a concentration in traditional ‘PAL’ TV areas; Europe, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa.

The Society particularly concerns itself with the training and career advancement of technical professionals in the field and also provides accreditation and certification for its members, giving them professional standing within the industry. SCTE training courses have gained wide acceptance as the standard for young technicians wishing to enter the field of cable telecommunications and for those wishing to advance their knowledge and career prospects.

The SCTE also stages lecture meetings six to seven times per year, mainly at the IET in London, in the Balkans and through its Benelux Group at selected European venues including IBC. It also runs an annual Balkan Broadband conference and exhibition in the Balkans, supported by high level sponsors. The Society chairs the British Standards Committee for cable systems and represents the UK at European (CENELEC) and world (IEC) levels.

SCTE will be exhibiting at booth G039 (Hall 10.2) at the ANGA Cable Show in Cologne, Germany from 12-14 June 2012.
