ECOC Market Focus Set to Address Key Challenges Facing the Optical Industry

Editor

Mass Market Broadband, Photonics integration, Data Centre Networks, Packet-optical, Optical Network Agility and Service Providers are the key topics for this year’s Market Focus sessions. The sessions sponsored by Inphi are a key part of the ECOC exhibition, with over 27 sessions confirmed from some of the industry’s global leaders, the sessions will address some of the key issues currently facing the optical industry. The Market Focus sessions will be held at the ECOC exhibition in Cannes on the 22-24th of September 2014.

“This year we wanted the Market Focus to be bigger and better by attracting a variety of global speakers to reflect the growing spectrum of the optical communications industry,” said Beverley Lucas, Group Event Manager for Nexus Business Media Ltd, organisers of the ECOC exhibition. “We are thrilled to welcome back the return of a whole host of world class industry speakers and are excited to show our visitors a quality line up of presentations.”

Day one of the 2014 Market Focus will begin with sessions on the first topic of data centres and will kick off on Monday 22 September at 10:25am. The session will include presentations from Ovum, Skorpios Inc, Kaiam Corp, ProLabs and Mellanox and Acacia Communication Photonics. One of the Market focus highlights will be a panel session on the day lead by Chris Cole from Finisar “Are Silicon Photonics and DSP approaches to Optics delivering on their promise of nearly free cost?” The panel is set to discuss why and when silicon is free compared to the optics market.

Day two will host the mass market session starting at 10.20am with a kick-off presentation from Hartwig Tauber of the FTTH Council as well as on point presentations throughout the morning from industry leaders such as Orange labs, Transmode and RVA LLC.

The afternoon will see some of the biggest names in the optical community sharing their insights into the industry with thought provoking presentations from fujitsu on the metro network evolution: from 100G to NG ROADM and Oclaro on 100G for metro. Companies such as Xtera Communication and Optical Infonetics Research will also be taking centre stage on Tuesday afternoon, with a final presentation on optical amplification and the directions in amplification technologies from JDSU’s Brandon Collings to conclude the second day.

The Market Focus finale on Wednesday will address optical network agility, beginning at 10.20am with presentations from OIF, Alcatel Lucent, II-VI Photonics, JDSU and Inphi. The final session of the morning will be wrapped up with a presentation from Winston Way of Neophotonics at 1:25pm about CDC ROADMs: exploring modular and expandable approaches. His presentation will explore a new modular approach to next-generation ROADM design as well as the challenges that designers of CDC ROADMs face with managing the up-front initial installation costs to support the large number of degrees or directions which may eventually be required in dense mesh networks.

“With a series of exciting topics, Cannes is set to host a variety of groundbreaking discussions” added Beverley.
