Vectoring Advances Need Best Practice Processes, Says Broadband Forum


Vectoring has gone from the drawing board to vendor product, trials and deployment faster than most in the industry thought possible, but now is the time for steady progress in deployment with the use of industry best practice in standards and testing. This was the clear message given to the market by Broadband Forum Chairman Kevin Foster, who was Chairing the TNO DSL Seminar (16-18 June) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Foster highlighted the problems of uncancelled crosstalk as being a typical barrier to mass market adoption. However, he told his audience of leading European service providers, vendors, regulators and analysts, that the Forum’s work in this area over the past year had led to an unparalleled range of crucial documents to guide network operators towards successful deployments.

The Forum’s BroadbandSuite 6.3 includes:

MR-257 issue 2: An Overview of G.993.5 Vectoring
TR-320: Techniques to Mitigate Uncancelled Crosstalk on Vectored VDSL2 Lines
TR-249: Testing of G.993.2 Self-FEXT Cancellation (vectoring)
MR-257 provides an overview of the benefits of vectored VDSL2. TR-320 contains a detailed and quantitative analysis on industry best practices that mitigate the effects of uncancelled crosstalk. TR-249 provides a set of performance, functional requirements and test methods for vectoring-capable VDSL2 systems.

Kevin Foster, Chairman of the Broadband Forum, said: “Our documents detail how to ensure that the benefits of vectoring can be realized whilst exploring the valuable options for avoiding or mitigating the impact of uncancelled crosstalk on the performance of vectored lines.”

Vectoring has been proven in the lab and field as an effective enhancement to make data rates of 100+ Mbps possible in VDSL2 dense deployment and ensures that there is an availability of high bandwidth services for all customers.

Global xDSL test equipment solution provider, Telebyte, is working in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) in its pioneering testing lab for VDSL2 vectoring. Utilizing Telebyte’s suite of VDSL2 vectoring test equipment and UNH-IOL expertise to provide testing per the Broadband Forum’s TR-249 standard and beyond, the lab, which is the first of its kind, addresses the need in the industry for independent VDSL2 vectoring testing services.
