Next generation PON technology specifications to be advanced at the first member meeting of 2014

Calix, Inc. today announced the company will host the first 2014 Quarterly Meeting for the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) organization, a group of more than 80 leading global telecommunications service providers, equipment manufacturers, and testing labs, with the mission to drive applicable standards and new technical specifications for Passive Optical Networks (PON) services and products. Calix, a two-time host of the event, will kick-off the meeting at the San Jose Convention Center on Mon., Feb. 17, and host participants throughout the remainder of the week.

“As a key contributor to the FSAN organization since 2001, Calix has collaborated closely with the group as they defined specifications for BPON, GPON, and now, the next generation PON technologies,” said Hal Roberts, Calix Standards Bodies Lead and representative to FSAN. “We are honored to host the first meeting of 2014 in the Silicon Valley, the world-renowned cradle of innovation for technology and a fitting location for defining the future of advanced broadband networks. We look forward to participating in this week’s meetings, and fostering the advancement of the next generation of fiber access technologies around the world.”

During the week-long meeting, FSAN members will continue work on Next Generation Passive Optical Network 2 (NG-PON2) specifications. With much progress already complete, the group will focus on finalizing NG-PON2 specifications supporting 40 Gigabit asymmetrical and symmetrical access services for both residential and business subscribers in a manner that enables a “pay-as-you-grow” model. Upon completion, FSAN members will contribute results to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which will issue recommendations defining the official standards for NG-PON2 architecture and technology.

“With some of the world’s most successful operators, equipment manufacturers, and independent test labs as part of the FSAN organization, we look forward to this important meeting in the heart of Silicon Valley,” said Martin Carroll, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon, Chairman of FSAN. “We have made considerable progress to date and are working toward finalizing specifications for next generation PON technology standardization, giving the industry a clear path to more advanced, highly capable broadband access networks.”

FSAN membership includes some of the largest telecommunications providers in the world, including, AT&T, Bell Canada, British Telecom, CenturyLink, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, CTBC, Deutsche Telekom, du, ETISALAT, Korea Telecom, Kuwait MOC, NTT, Orange, Portugal Telecom, SaskTel, SK Telecom/SK Broadband, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telekom Malaysia, Telstra, TELUS, Verizon, and Vodafone. Also participating in the Silicon Valley meetings will be FSAN’s newest members, Comcast and Cox Communications.
