Thousands of high speed Newtec Ka-band VSAT terminals foreseen to be deployed within first year of service

Bentley Walker, one of the world’s leading service providers for broadband satellite Internet, is extending its service coverage towards Libya using Newtec’s Ka-band VSAT broadband platform and mainly deploying services using the MDM2200 IP Satellite Modem.

The new service, which will deliver high speed broadband connectivity to Libya, is set to go live on September 26th and will provide reliable high-speed broadband Internet access across the country via a Newtec IP Broadband HUB (Sat3Play®) installed at Avanti’s gateway at Makarios Teleport in Cyprus. The new service will make use of Avanti’s HYLAS 2 Ka-band capacity which was launched in August last year.

Complex geography and poor terrestrial infrastructure in Libya means satellite based broadband Internet is quickly becoming the only high-speed solution for the majority of the country. This region covered by HYLAS 2 can be seen as a very promising opportunity.

Anthony Walker, CEO of Bentley Walker, said: “We are pleased to work with Newtec in delivering this new service and selected Newtec as a partner because of the excellent network performance, the company’s reputation for reliability and the ease of installing each user terminal. The Newtec Network Management System will provide our in-country distribution partners full access and control to the installed terminals, allowing our partners to provide on the spot after-sales support in the local language.

“Newtec’s network management solution is rather unique in the VSAT industry and will contribute largely to network performance management as well as to increased end-customer satisfaction.”

The Newtec VSAT terminals based on the MDM2200 IP Satellite Modems, have been designed for both consumers as well as for SME and B2B. They are 2-way, high throughput terminals supporting a wide range of IP-based services like Internet access and VoIP, as well as multicast based services. Newtec’s modems are designed to operate with the latest generation of high throughput Ka-band satellites, enabling much higher throughput than has previously been possible.

Serge Van Herck, CEO of Newtec, said: “We believe there is a lot of demand in Libya for satellite Internet and are very pleased to be working with our partners, Bentley Walker and Avanti, to deliver a new service offering for the region. Our VSAT terminals have been developed to keep cost down whilst maintaining maximum quality and ensuring the optimal link for each and every end user.”

Newtec has already delivered several VSAT hubs to Avanti currently being operated from Avanti’s teleport in Cyprus, allowing service deployment towards the various Ka-band spotbeams on the HYLAS 2 Ka-band satellite.
