E7-2 provides flexibility for services growth, brings gigabit broadband speeds to subscribers

Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) has today announced that North Italian communications service provider Interplanet has chosen the Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) for the successful implementation of a scalable, high-speed network. Based in Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza), Interplanet provides advanced business and residential services to a rapidly growing customer base across Northern Italy. Leveraging the E7-2 and its support of VDSL2, GPON, and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet technologies, Interplanet is now empowering businesses with advanced broadband services including value-added IP telephony services, integrated voice and data communications, email services, and network security.

Interplanet continues to transform its network to provide greater bandwidth and service reliability as its base of business customers grows. Interplanet utilizes the E7-2 to deliver symmetrical speeds from 10-up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) over both GPON and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet for services that include voice and data, as well as videoconferencing and cloud applications for businesses in the Verona region. The flexibility of the E7-2 also allows each customer to upgrade to gigabit services as their service requirements change. Interplanet plans to expand into Padua near Venice later in the year and add residential services to its service portfolio in the future.

“We had looked at a number of solutions before we found Calix,” said Roberto Guiotto, spokesperson at Interplanet. “The Calix E7-2 offered us what we were looking for in terms of scalability as we grow our customer base and the ability to combine VDSL2, GPON, and point-to-point gigabit Ethernet in one platform. We are implementing a ringed network with the E7-2 to deliver protected Internet services to our customers, while also allows us to connect our Wi-Fi radio base stations. Calix was the only company that could provide a solution from the street cabinet to customer premises equipment and could meet our requirements fully.”

The modular, flexible nature of the E7-2 allowed Interplanet to begin with a trial deployment and introductory service and expand now as demand has increased. This pay-as-you-grow approach has proven beneficial to Interplanet, which has utilized a number of different E7-2 configurations for fiber access deployment, as well as 10 GE transport, within its small 1 rack unit (RU) modular chassis.

Guiotto added, “We believe that high-speed Internet services can make an enormous difference in our country, both culturally and economically. Calix has helped us to create this opportunity to improve services for the businesses in our region.”

“Interplanet is a company that has a clear vision for its network and business transformation,” said Andy Lockhart, senior vice president of international sales and marketing at Calix. “As we have developed a close working relationship with their team, it has been apparent that they are building an infrastructure that is prepared for the emerging broadband demands of the future, and in doing so enabling their customers, and the communities that they service in Northern Italy, to thrive. We are looking forward to working with Interplanet as they enable new advanced broadband services for their subscribers across this growing region.”
