Part of the remit of this work is a mandate for future proofing the process as the core UK network converts from the current ISUP technology towards an end-to-end SIP network.

“This work is a key part of NICC’s remit to deliver signalling protocol standards to ensure end to end interoperability and the ubiquity of services for customers connected to every part of the network,” said Donald Murray, Chairman of the NICC’s SIP Task Group.

“Our task group is developing a set of protocol and interworking standards to ensure that SIP development in the UK will meet relevant requirements, including emergency call priority, for the foreseeable future as the network evolves.”

NICC has recently established a liaison with the SIP Forum, further strengthening its commitment to this work. This relationship will enable both organisations to work towards the common goal of creating SIP standards that enable services to work end-to-end.

The SIP PBX guidelines are being published as NICC continues to play a pivotal role in developing interoperability standards and its rising membership is evidence of the acknowledgement of the importance of the work it is carrying out. Several major companies and organisations have become members since the start of the year, including Cloudmark and Unify Enterprise Communications Ltd.

NICC membership is open to any organisation that has something to offer within the UK telecommunications environment. Any such organisation is welcome to make enquiries through the secretary (nick.ireland@niccstandards.org.uk) and is encouraged to visit the NICC web site – http://www.niccstandards.org.uk/.

Cloudmark sponsored last year’s highly successful NICC Annual Forum in London. This year’s NICC Annual Open Forum will take place on November 12 at 1 Great George Street, Westminster, London. NICC members and non-members can attend this all day event, which year on year proves to be a valuable education and networking opportunity. Further details are available from the NICC secretary, Nick Ireland nick.ireland@niccstandards.org.uk.

One of the major discussion points at last year’s Open Forum was the battle against nuisance calls in the UK and NICC has already developed a Guidelines document for tracing nuisance calls to their source. Ofcom has used these guidelines to carry out a UK-wide trial involving NICC members.

Huw Saunders, Director of Network Infrastructure at Ofcom, said: “NICC continues to play a critical role in the collaborative effort to tackle the issue of nuisance calls. The organisation’s expertise has been particularly instrumental in work to improve and simplify call tracing processes and increase the likelihood of companies behind nuisance calls being successfully identified.

“Last year, we asked NICC to develop a new industry standard for call tracing between networks, as well as revising current rules on how CLIs are passed between networks and presented to customers. We look forward to continuing to work closely with NICC to ensure these new processes are put into practice and operate effectively.”

“Nuisance calls are not just a nuisance, they are an invasion of personal space and can leave people feeling threatened and vulnerable,” said Paul Rosbotham, Chairman of the NICC Technical Steering Group and the Nuisance Call Task Group.

“At NICC we are determined to do everything possible to help the appropriate authorities take action on nuisance calls”, he added.

If you would like more information, or are interested in becoming a NICC member, please contact Nick Ireland, Board Secretary at nick.ireland@niccstandards.org.uk.

NICC, the UK’s technical forum for telecommunications interoperability, is working to complete a guideline document for the UK market which will support the rapidly growing SIP PBX market and include standardising implementation of 999 calls.

NICC has been working on … Read More

[269,268,135,271,270
post-3532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","tag-documents","tag-guidelines","tag-nicc","tag-nuisance-calls","tag-sip-pbx
["GET
