New chips confirm G.hn’s capabilities for multimedia and HD applications in the home networking environment

The HomeGrid Forum welcomes the launch of Sigma Designs’ second generation G.hn chipset announced earlier today on the eve of the CES exhibition in Las Vegas. The Sigma Designs CG5200 family of chips will provide the basis for networked entertainment including Triple Play and IPTV over three forms of existing household wires: power line, coax and phone line.

Developed by the UN’s International Telecommunications Union – Telecom (ITU-T) standards development organization, G.hn technology is based on an extensive standards family for home networking over existing home wires, enabling the delivery of multichannel HD content throughout the home. The new Sigma Designs chipset can be embedded to “G.hn-enable” consumer electronics devices, gateways and set-top boxes for home networking, enabling the delivery of multiple streams of HDTV video content, 3DTV video traffic, audio content, VoIP, data, gaming and other applications.

Expected to be in volume production by Q2 of 2013, the CG5200 is already in trials with several OEM and ODM customers and will be showcased in the HomeGrid Forum’s Booth, # 21906 (South Hall 1, Ground Level) during this week’s CES show.

Matt Theall, President of the HomeGrid Forum, said: “We are delighted to see this new chipset from Sigma Designs which offers high speed in-home communications and services capabilities. Sigma Designs has always been a very active member of the HomeGrid Forum, pushing the boundaries as this exciting new technology is deployed.”
